Effects of Nanoparticles on Double-Stranded RNA Stability in Moth Hemolymph

RNA interference (RNAi) is an immune response in which double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) suppresses a target gene. By designing dsRNA to target genes that are necessary for life, dsRNA can potentially be used as an insecticide. RNAi-based insecticides are badly needed because they are more specific than conventional pesticides and because many insects have developed resistance to pesticides. Unfortunately, some insects produce enzymes that degrade dsRNA and prevent the RNAi response (Cooperet al., 2018). Therefore, RNAi-based insecticides currently cannot be used to control all insects. Here we investigate dsRNA stability when incubated in hemolymph ex vivoto determine if degradation of dsRNA is contributing to the inadequate RNAi response exhibited by lepidopterans, such as the European corn borer (ECB, Ostrinia nubilalis). Our findings indicate that dsRNA is significantly degraded in ECB hemolymph, but encapsulation of dsRNA in chitosan-based nanoparticles (CB-NPs) enhances stability. These findings provide insight into RNAi efficiency limitations in insects, and may provide a method to enhance RNAi efficiency in lepidopterans and other RNAi-refractory pests

The association between umbilical cord blood fat-soluble vitamin concentrations and infant birth weight

BackgroundFat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D and E, play an important role in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, and may affect infant birth weight. Evidence on the association of birthweight with fat-soluble vitamins is controversial. Therefore, this study aims is to determine the associations of birthweight with vitamin A, D, and E concentrations in cord blood.MethodsA total of 199 mother–infant pairs were enrolled in the study. According to gestational age and birth weight, the mother–infant pairs were divided into small for gestational age (SGA), appropriate for gestational age (AGA), and large for gestational age (LGA). The Vitamin A, D, and E concentrations in serum were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry.ResultsThe concentrations of vitamin A in the SGA group were significantly lower than those in the AGA and LGA groups. The concentrations of vitamin E in the SGA group were significantly higher than those in the AGA and LGA groups. However, no significant differences were observed in vitamin D among the three groups. Being male (β = 0.317, p < 0.001) and birth weight (β = 0.229, p = 0.014) were positively correlated with the levels of vitamin A. Birth weight (β = -0.213, p= 0.026) was correlated with lower levels of vitamin E. No correlation was found between influencing Factors and the levels of vitamin D (p> 0.05). After adjusting for gestational age, sex, mother’s age, delivery mode, pre-pregnancy BMI, and weight gain during pregnancy, the levels of cord blood vitamin A were positively correlated with birth weight (p=0.012).ConclusionThe infant’s birth weight is associated with the levels of cord blood vitamins A and E. The dysregulation of vitamins A and E in infants may be a risk factor for fetal growth and future metabolic diseases

Emotional Resonance and Identity Recognition in Chinese Late Adolescent Digital Music Consumption

This study conducts qualitative research on late adolescent digital music users aged 17–19 to explore their emotional resonance and identities in digital music consumption. The findings indicate that late adolescents are highly dependent on music, with it playing a significant role in their lives, particularly in meeting emotional needs and shaping identities. Late-adolescent digital music users seek to assert themselves through unique and unconventional music tastes. The study also uncovers the coexistence of personalization and socialization in their music-listening behaviors, dividing them into “music-experienced” and “music-socialized” groups. Regarding emotional motivation, the music-experienced group listens to music for personal empathy, while the music-socialized group seeks interpersonal emotional resonance through music-based social interaction. From a practical perspective, this study suggests that the digital music industry should focus on the emotional value generated by music and balance users’ personalization and socialization needs
